Hurricane Wilma is a Category 5

If you had told me in March that we were going to have three Cat 5 storms in the Gulf of Mexico this year, I would have been really skeptical. I've plotted the data and read the papers, but three Cat 5's !? I know the data indicates more storms, and more intense storms, but this is getting a little ridiculous. The trend lines also indicate that next year will be as bad, if not worse. There is no way we can pay for this kind of repeated damage. My dad has a condominium in Florida. He tells me that they still haven't finished repairing last year's damage.

On a different note:

I left the Catholic Church at the age of 18. After looking at the other available religions I became and agnostic. Over the years I have drifted to atheism. But the programming the vicious little nuns inflicted on me has remained intact. They created a virtual nun in my brain. Over the years I have managed to gag her and lock her in a mental closet. But after all the earthquakes, tsunamis, bird flu and hurricanes, she has managed to spit out the gag and is screaming at the top of her lungs, "Mankind has been very bad and god is now punishing you".

I am a man of science. I do not believe in the wraith of god, the current spat of disasters are natural processes. Indications are that some have been aggravated by man's cavalier attitude toward nature, but still, they are just the laws of Physics at work.

On the other hand, that nun is getting really annoying.

LOL. Penguins have no mercy.

But I would point out the difference between being a Cat 5 at sea, and being a Cat 5 when it hits land. I'd note that if any hypothetical Supreme Being were really annoyed, there are more effective ways to kick the crap out of the human race.

Interesting but apt choice of words, BTW. "Viscous" nuns! Did you mean "vicious" (aggressively cruel) or do you mean that that darn nun just really really sticks like glue? ;-)

Fixed it!

I dunno, Bob, it fits well both ways for your virtual penguin.

What's the track record for Cat 5's that don't hit land as Cat 5's? Any idea? Only the ones that hit hard ashore ever get my attention. It's not a prime thing to worry about here in flyover country.

Looks like prior to 2005, there have only been three other Cat five to hit land in recorded history (USA).

Here is the NHC page on the subject: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastint.shtml

Try mining the hurricane archive at: http://maps.wunderground.com/tropical/
It's about half way down the page.

could be karma, or if you're NW indian it could be that old trickster Raven teaching mankind a lesson or two.
I mean really, why should 'god' get all the credit?

Me, I look back to my climatology classes in the late 70's with a professor who grew up around hurricanes (he was from Jamaica) and basically noted that we were in for more highly variable weather because of the slightest perceived warming of the climate. It was, after all, a lot of CO2 and heat for the environment to absorb by both the physical and chemical processes available in nature.

Well, if this is God's doing, I don't see the point of punishing poor and elderly people.

Great post...lol. As far as the little nun in your head goes, just pull the ruler out of the top drawer and rap her knuckles. That'll quiet her for a while. I still have a little Baptist preacher in my head, but he has an aversion to alchohol, so it's usually pretty easy to send him running.

In all seriousness (and I am a Christian, although not an evangelical), I don't believe that natural disasters are anything more than natural disasters. They run in cycles and it seems like the last two years have seen quite a few, but just compare them (and I'm in no way minimizing the loss of any life) to a few of the massive losses of life throughout history. One that comes to mind is the earthquake that hit the eastern Mediterranean in 1201--over 1 million people lost their lives. Or, look at the bubonic plague that hit Europe in in the mid 1300's--over 25 million are estimated to have lost their lives.

Actually, with today's science, technology, and communcation, we are a lot better off than we were in the centuries that preceded us.

yeah, we only have to worry about nuclear annhilation, superbugs and reruns of "My Mother the Car"

Posted by: Marcus at October 19, 2005 03:15 PM

Hey, I have an idea on how to chase the little nun away. I doubt she has an aversion to alchohol, but there is one activity that comes to mind that would probably send her scurrying. It also happens to be great cardio, relaxes you, and makes you forget all of the world's problems.

I'm sure you can figure it out...lol.

I'm sure the libs will blame this storm on the President, too...

Well, while the storm is raging, he can always play his favorite musical instrument.
