Friday Open Thread

...because Tully's getting out of control with these wildcat monday and wednesday open threads. Where's the discipline?

I'm not the one who forgot last week....

;-)

PS--Todd beat you to it. Bwa ha ha! Dual dueling open threads!

Posted by: Tully at September 23, 2005 01:01 PM

Last week wasn't so bad. I remember the whole thing.

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 01:02 PM

Deuling open threads!! I know how to win. Let's talk about beer.

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 01:03 PM

I had a smoked stout at the brew pub the other day, which sounds weird but was mighty tasty.

Posted by: Tully at September 23, 2005 01:20 PM

I tried Brooklyn Brewing Co.'s Octoberfest. It was a little disappointing. I generally have liked all the beers of theirs that I've tried. This one just lacks a little hop bite and I don't think it has enough alcohol to finish as well as it could. Smoked stoudt sounds a lot like smoked trout.

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 01:26 PM

My bad. I'm game on beer. I've been enjoying Stella Artois lately, and in these parts Sam Adams light is well regarded. I have to admit that over time I've tired of trying various craft brews. they've served to raise the quality and variety of what is available at a fairly high production level, and that's all to the good. Open to recommendations.

While we are on the topic, does anyone know if i can grow hops in MA? Not to make beer, just for sh!+s, giggles, and sniffs.

Did anyone catch the story about the really old lady who atrributed her longevity to hostess snowballs and yukon jack? I have some admiration for that. Should I be so lucky to reach 80 or older, that's "playin with the house's money" status. If I want snowballs and yukon, or devil dogs with a jack d and coke, or kahlua and funny bones, or even twinkies with my glenlivet, god help anyone who stands in my way, they're in for a cane-whuppin. Those ones with the 4-legged platform, those'll leave a mark.

Amen!

Today is the birthday of the late Ray Charles. Thank you, Brother Ray.

Try the Spaten Oktoberfest if you run across it, but only between October and March. After March it tends to get stale and bitter.

I surrender. This will consolidate all comments onto a single thread.

I have been fortunate to have two distractions from Katrina/Rita, as well as my miserable Minnesota Vikings. First, we got a new Golden Retriever puppy. I forgot how much work having a puppy is. Second, I am getting ready to run in the Twin Cities Marathon next weekend, which will be my first (and last?) marathon. Before March of this year, I had never run more than 5 miles at one time so it has been a long 6 months of gearing up. I'm ready to get it over with.
Posted by Todd Pearson at September 23, 2005 11:53 AM

I ran the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon in 2003 and it was a blast. You really get a great sense of accomplishment from finishing. However, I remember in the last weeks leading up to the race, I was so sick of running 45 miles a week, I could hardly stand it.

Good luck, it's definitely worth it.

Yeah, this thread blows. Where's the talk about beer? All you people who want to chat about wine and cheese can stay here.

I was drinking the Spaten Oktoberfest last weekend. I usually drink Hacker Pschorr, but Spaten was $1.20 cheaper. WOOO HOOO!! Anyway, it was good. It seemed to have a little more punch than the Hacker.

I don't know how many Texans are on here, but I hope all have gotten away from the coast. I'm here in San Antonio and as recently as two days ago there were cries that Rita could bring us 8 -10 inches of rain and 70 mile an hour winds (we're about 160 miles from the coast). Now the prediction is 0 inches of rain and maybe some gusts up to 10-15 miles an hour.

We're releived, of course, but this has all played emotional havok on us ... and if it's done that to San Antonio, I can't imagine what they must be feeling in areas that are much more threatened.

I don't really have a point here...just that watching Rita approach for five days has been nausiating. I have friends and relatives that weren't able to make it all that far inland because of the traffic. But at least they're away from the coastline.

Hope all of y'all can find a moment to say a little prayer for Texas and Louisianna.

Speaking of beer, my 21st birthday is one month from last wendesday (not that I'm counting)

For those of you who are not that good at math, my 21st birthday is on the 21st, which means it's my Golden Birthday. That means I'm flying to Las Vegas for a three day sin spree with my father, which I have been planning, literally, since I was 10 years old.

Posted by: Art at September 23, 2005 03:33 PM

Art,

Sorry to hear that you have will have nothing to look forward to for the rest of your life after the 21st. Congratulations!

WHQ

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 03:40 PM

Dang. That means my Golden Birthday was my third. And me too young to drink beer! Or smoke. Or drive. Or stay home by myself. Or reach the TV dial..

*Sigh*...

Posted by: Blue Jean at September 23, 2005 04:02 PM

My birthday is next week, and it's a prime number. My last birthday was a perfect square. Do I know how to party or what?

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 04:11 PM

What? ;-)

No, seriously, happy birthday!

It sounds like you're posing a math problem here. Do we get extra credit if we solve it?

Posted by: Blue Jean at September 23, 2005 04:15 PM

Is your dad any good at sin sprees, Art? ;-)

Posted by: Tully at September 23, 2005 04:28 PM

"It sounds like you're posing a math problem here. Do we get extra credit if we solve it?"

If by "extra credit" you mean an unexpressed recognition of your solving it, yes.

Posted by: WHQ at September 23, 2005 04:33 PM

Hooray!

257, WHQ? Boy, I've got a history question or two to ask you....

Hoping to crack open my Xingu supply this weekend. It's dark, syrupy stuff from Peru. Normally my taste is more dark and bittery, but it's a nice change, and I haven't seen any since '94.

Posted by: Jon Kay at September 23, 2005 07:55 PM

Alright dammit...I was promised some beer on this thread. Pony up.

(Actually, I don't even like beer. I'm not much of a drinker. I do like gin and tonics when it's hot...got any of those?)

Posted by: Susan at September 24, 2005 12:22 AM

Okay, someone got it right, but I'm not letting on.

Xingu, huh? I think I've seen that but never had it. '94 was a long time ago. That's good marketing. It makes it seem mysterious and intriguing. Peru doesn't hurt either. Any hallucinations?

Posted by: WHQ at September 24, 2005 01:05 AM

The Profesora pointed out that I was guilty of personally posting misinformation without checking. In fact, Xingu is from Brazil. It seems to go well with fried rice.....

:-) Oh, and I do hope you have a happy birthday.

Hallucinations: well, I keep hearing on the radio about a hurricane named Rita hitting here. Is that real?

Posted by: Jon Kay at September 24, 2005 10:02 AM

Bombay Sapphire, Carla? Virtual booze is free, you can have whatever you like.

Posted by: Tully at September 24, 2005 10:20 AM

Tully comes through in the clutch! LOL

Posted by: carla at September 24, 2005 10:45 AM

If you'd said Martinis or Gibsons, I'd have said Beefeaters. Personal taste. And Boodles is good no matter how you serve it!

Posted by: Tully at September 24, 2005 01:28 PM

I concoted a drink from left over Christmas booze a couple of years ago. Sapphire with Amaretto on the rocks. I called it a "Blue Nut" (nice imagery, aye?). It sounds bad, but it wasn't.

Posted by: WHQ at September 24, 2005 02:15 PM

XINGU!?!?!?!

awww cooool. that's great stuff....

Posted by: Marcus at September 24, 2005 03:57 PM

What? No Budweiser fans? LOL.

I suspect if we all got together for a party that we'd turn out to be fairly moderate drinkers, but that the liquor bill would still be ENORMOUS!

I'd rather drink great liquor and less of it than lots and lots of mediocre booze.

Posted by: Tully at September 25, 2005 07:53 PM

I'm a Killian's Irish Red fan. It's great on draft, but I'll drink it straight from the bottle. Budweiser... you know, I like you Tully, but there's no way I can support anyone who loves their Bud.

Posted by: CleverWes at September 26, 2005 11:01 AM

Me neither, Wes. I was joking. I don't drink the thin malt mouthwash unless really really thirsty on hot days, when there's nothing else handy. Like water.

Some of their captive brands developed from microbrews are drinkable and non-revolting, like Zeigenbock on tap. But I wouldn't go out of my way.

Posted by: Tully at September 26, 2005 12:18 PM

I was being sarcastic with ya, Tully.

Anyone who knows me is that I'm not one to waste money. If I buy something, I'd have to be dead not to use it - even if it does stink.

I tried Bud Light for the first time about a month back. When I first tried it, I offered the bottle to a friend telling him that I thought it had spoiled. He tried it and told me that it was how Bud Light was supposed to taste. I was able to choke down three before the other three bottles were used to water the plants.

Posted by: CleverWes at September 26, 2005 09:44 PM

You can always use it in a chili base....or for steaming clams or shrimp! Or beer batter.
