September 02, 2005Canada's response to KatrinaWe're with you, America. Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, a department of the Government of Canada, has set up an information page to encourage donations to the Canadian Red Cross and to registered charities. In addition, both Prime Minister Paul Martin and the Federal Government have issued statements to address the aftermath of Katrina and the ongoing state of emergency in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. As the prime minister put it: "We have made it clear that we are prepared to offer any and all possible assistance, and we will continue to work closely with our neighbours as they deal with this terrible event." Needless to say, we stand by you in this time of need. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering through this horrible ordeal, and we're helping in any way we can. Comments
Michael, From Louisiana, I thank you and your countrymen. It is a welcome reminder of the depth of friendship between our countries which overwhelms the petty political fracas we create from time to time. Posted by: PatHMV at September 2, 2005 03:20 AMThanks, PatHMV. This is a time when our national and partisan differences should come down. There is a great friendship between our two countries, however drowned out it may from time to time by the din of politics. I hope you're doing okay down there. The fact that Canada is quick off the mark to offer support does not surprise me, given the compassionate nature of most Canadians that I've met. Thank you. "The Maple Leaf Forever!"
