Streets Paved with Sanctimony

Hat tip to the Mighty Middle for this article on Tom Monaghan's plan to build God City.

Bold talk — but the most dramatic part of Monaghan’s speech is yet to come. Ave Maria won’t be just a university, he continues. It will also be a new town, built from scratch, in which the wickedness of the world will be kept at bay. "We’ve already had about 3500 people inquire on our Web site about buying a home there — you know, they’re all Catholic," Monaghan says excitedly. "We’re going to control all the commercial real estate, so there’s not going to be any pornography sold in this town. We’re controlling the cable system. The pharmacies are not going to be able to sell condoms or dispense contraceptives." A private chapel will be located within walking distance of each home. At the stunning church in the center of town, Mass will be said hourly, seven days a week, from 6 a.m. on. "So," Monaghan concludes, with just a hint of understatement, "it’ll be a unique town." As he exits the stage, the applause is thunderous.

This is a TREEEEEEEEEEEE-mendous idea. This has to happen. I don't even have a joke here.

Wait, yes I do. Count me in as an investor with whoever wants to start a sin city over in the next county.

See Newton's third law of motion. If you have a Las Vegas, somewhere completely licentious and amoral, something like this will happen; and if there is a sense that the nation is getting too far out of the ballpark, people will look for alternatives. After all - why were the pilgrim fathers here again?

Well, if that's what they want to do, they have the money to buy the land, and they can find the folks to live there, more power to them.

Isn't this what freedom is all about? (Not that I would want to live there, but why should I complain about them setting up what THEY want???)

I was thinking about opening a store just outside the city limit called Der Porn Haus. Any investors?
I see it as the Wall Drug of porn and other stuff of the like.

We have a 300+ yr history of establishing such religious communities. Why does this surprise us? Maintaining the separation is the tough part, though the Amish have done a decent job.

Despite my distate for traditional Christian theology and my belief that the anti-contraception stance of the Catholic Church is a nefarious plot to increase the number of Catholics, this actually seems pretty cool to me--but probably more in theory. Kinda like how Plato's Republic is cool in theory: rule by virtuous philosopher-kings, why not?

I actually think this could work well as long as they don't try to be all Taliban about it; however, it seems that those tendencies exist.

But I really do sympathize with those who want to get away from the corrosive modern culture and want to lead to virtuous and spiritually devoted lives. However, I think viewing conservative Catholicism as "The Truth" is a bit dangerous. I guess I have a bit of a soft spot for religious ceremony, saints, and modern-day goddess worship (devotion to Mary) despite my Eastern leanings.

As an interesting aside, do people realize that Domino's Pizza was a well-chosen name? Think Domino, Domini, Dominum--Latin forms for Lord, as in to dominate. So it truly is the Lord's pizza.

Just as a matter of pre-emption, I probably ought to not have written "goddess worship" but I do think it does reflect an inner need to have some devotion towards the divine feminine. Ironic that Catholicism is so strict towards women: no women priests, no contraception etc.

I'm happy to let such people self-segrate as long as it's in the form of a private development. if they try to incorporate as a town, there may be civil liberties issues.

That aside, I must quarrel with the notion that Domino's is the lord's pizza. Think about pizza and ask WWJD? He'd use a lot more cheese, that's what he'd do. And the crust wouldn't taste like the box. After all, if he could walk on water, he's virtually certain to know how to make a tasty pie, which is something that entirely escapes Dominos. I dunno how the rest of the nation views pizza, but here on the east coast, calling dominos is purely an act of cheapness and/or desparation. They're the provider of last resort.

Simoin, is it your contention that the Pilgrims came here to get away from casinos and prostitution? :-)

The fly in the ointment will, of course, be the second generation, who won't have chosen to live there and will be inclined to rebel. That's where intentional communities usually fall apart. It suspect it works for the Amish, somewhat, because they aren't particularly oppressive. And they aren't concentrated into a particular town - exes can escape each other, for example.

"Think about pizza and ask WWJD?"

Anchovies!!! They are fish, after all.

"I'll have a pre-Vatican 2 Friday pizza, please..."

I want the video arcade franchise. The liability insurance is so much cheaper than the tavern's.

Going to control the cable company, huh?
Guess that means no "Pizza Hut" commercials on the airwaves.

But seriously, he can do whatever he wants to do in my opinion...as long as he pays taxes like everyone else (or at least like most everyone else does).

I wonder if they'll have a gift shop. It could be part of the "Florida tour"...Disney, Daytona, Kennedy Space Center...and Godville.
