A factoid that means?

This from Christianity Today. They run a regular page "Go Figure". I don't know what this means or says about Americans or America but it just fascinates me.

41%

Americans who have a favorable impression of the "Christian conservative movement."

45%

Americans who have a favorable impression of Muslims

Political correctness, maybe?

Or, then again, maybe it's the devil we know, versus the devil we don't?

Many, many, people would take a moderate Muslim over a radical Christian any day, but the poll doesn't get that specific, does it?

Posted by: Ryan at June 25, 2005 03:43 AM

The poll would read very differently if "Muslims" were replaced with "The Muslim conservative movement." We're comparing apples and oranges here.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at June 25, 2005 04:10 AM

I'd agree with you Michael except for the fact that the media rarely portrays moderate muslims.

Posted by: marcus at June 25, 2005 06:43 AM

Ryan is probably right, people answer such questions how they think they should, not how they really feel. It is kind of like Gay Marraige or Civil Unions. People poll much more tolerant then they will vote in the private polling booth. Een Blue States voted fairly strongly againts Gay Marraige.

Michael is absolutely right, apples & oranges.

Marcus, when have the media portrayed Christians as anything close to moderate?

Posted by: Alf at June 25, 2005 10:15 PM

Alf;

when have the media portrayed Christians as anything close to moderate?
Speaking as a moderate Christian; about as often as they've portrayed a Muslim as a moderate.

There are more good apples than bad, it's just the bad smell more...

C3,

I gather from your reply that you don’t watch too much TV or many movies. I am secular and have not set foot in a house of worship of any kind except for weddings, funerals, etc., in over a decade and even I see the bias against Christians in TV and movies.

For example, there have been several movies about the Crusades recently all of which show the Moslems in the best possible light while portraying the European Christians as evil and/or greedy bastards looking to attack innocent Moslems who just wanted to be left alone. In any TV drama or movie that features terrorism the perpetrator will be a white Christian male of the Eric Rudolph type. Anything else would be racist in the eyes of C3 and others.

Posted by: Alf at June 26, 2005 07:32 PM

Now we're mixing apples and oranges, and entertainment and news outlets. -granted, the line between them is slowly disappearing-

I would argue both are too fond of political correctness, but I would also argue that we could site countless sources defending either side of the arguement.

Posted by: Ryan at June 26, 2005 08:13 PM

Alf;
I would agree that there haven't been too many positive portrayals of Christians in the movies (although I do think that's improving). My point is I don't see many positive portrayals of Muslims in the media. Now, in this case it maybe because the radicals get all the press. I would love it if a moderate Muslim voice became more vocal. Some have suggested a need for a Muslim reformation. That would be tough since there is no central "Church" (which brings up an interesting parallel since there is not central evangelical church either.)
