What the troops know about Iraq

Some of you may have dealt with this already, since it isn't new, but have you all seen the "Iraq Culture Smart Card" for American troops? Check it out here. (I've replaced the pdf file with a regular link.)

Fascinating stuff.

All I can say is that, despite all the allegations of abuse -- and they're obviously extremely troubling -- there's absolutely no justification for the moral equivalency argument. Some Iraqis may not have welcomed us, and we may not have done things exactly right, but at least there has been considerable effort -- and this Smart Card is proof of that -- to be sensitive and understanding of the local culture.

The troops have questionable respect for the Iraqi citizens, their culture, or their rights... which is to say that many do, and many don't.

Photos have been released which show U.S. soldiers planting weapons in front of young Iraqi teens, in order to implicate them as being insurgents and enemy casualties. This behavior is very reminiscent of the infamous "body counts" of Vietnam, and it does nothing to endear us to the Iraqi people.
