Radical Middle Entertainment?

The other day I saw the Life of David Gale on DVD with some of my friends. For those of you who haven't seen it, you should. It's a film about a death penalty abolitionist who has himself gotten the death penalty. At first the film seems to have a pro-abolitionist slant and feels like just another liberal preaching vehicle. However, if you stick it out, you'll find it's an incredibly radicl middle piece of entertainment.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for centrist fare from the entertainment field?

Speaking of health care, you might check out "John Q". It's about a man trying to get a heart transplant for his dying son; the insurance won't pay for it, so he takes a waiting room hostage. It's a cut above the usual madman-with-a-gun fare, and it resonates with the increasing army of those falling through the cracks of society.

Boy, I HATED Gale. One of the worst pieces of crap ever, IMO. I WARN people about this movie.

John Q is a left wing movie. Leftists take hostages. In the same position a centrist would bitch until his son died and then vow to punish the extremists in the next election. A conservative would go to court to get an injunction to keep the kid plugged in to life support forever.

And in the Wes Craven version, John Q. goes "shopping" for a tissue match....

It's tough to know what to call a "centrist" movie, 'cause us centrists don't have "bright line" issues that translate well to simplistic cinema. Does anything that isn't a leftist or rightist movie qualify? I nominate Young Frankenstein!

LOL! That would be great, if you could discount the "Sweet Mystery of Life" scene. The rad fems would be up in arms over the scene of a woman being ravished by a man (or resurrected man) and enjoying it, while Dr. Frist and the prolifers would be debating whether it's ethical to resurrect somebody (never minding robbing the labs for "Abby Normal's" brain.)

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you, Alf, if this was the wild 60s', but today's leftists are too tired to carry a brief case, let alone a gun. (Besides, the Qs go to church; Michael Medved says leftists never attend church/synagogue/mosque/whatever, and who are we, to argue with Michael Medved?)
They'd probably hold three hours of excruiatingly boring hearings on how to reform the health care system, then break up to meet for a sequel, which would never be made.

Randall Terry and the right wingers, on the other hand, would take to the streets, hold 24 hour prayer vigils, demand Congress pass a special law, call the President home from vacation to sign it, and...oh, wait, you mean this is an African-American patient, like Sun Hudson, not a white woman like Terri Schiavo?

Never mind....;-)
