The Ford Family

Moderate Democrat Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. is one of our favorites on this blog. He has high ambitions, but his uncle isn't doing him any favors.

Those charged include state Sens. John Ford (D), Kathryn Bowers (D) and Ward Crutchfield (D); state Rep. Chris Newton (R); and former state senator Roscoe Dixon (D). Calls to the legislators' offices were not immediately returned. Ford also is charged with three counts of attempting to threaten or intimidate potential witnesses. The indictment said he told an undercover agent that "if he caught someone trying to set him up he would shoot that person." Ford is alleged to have taken a payoff of $55,000 from E-Cycle Management; the other defendants allegedly got lesser amounts.

His brother is former U.S. representative Harold Ford Sr. (D-Tenn.), who served 11 terms. His nephew, Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.), has served five terms in Congress and just entered the race for the seat held by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.).
Harold Ford, Sr. also had his legal problems, being acquitted of bank fraud charges. I've never heard anything bad about Harold Ford, Jr., however--other than the opinion of some Democrats that he's too conservative. Posted by rickheller at May 27, 2005 01:35 PM

I went to college in Memphis when Harold Ford Sr. was in Congress. I don't know much about Harold Jr. (he seems to be a good guy), but it doesn't particularly surprise me that the senior members of the Ford family would be involved in shady dealings.

Ford’s main problem is that he doesn’t have the statewide recognition that his opponents do. Still, a moderate Democrat can win in Tennessee, just look at the currant governor.

Yup, I am a huge fan of Ford and I hope his run for the U.S. Senate in a Red State doesn't end his career. He was once said to have doubts about running for the seat, which IMO were legitimate, but apparently has changed his mind and announced.

Coincidentally, Ron says that Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker is running for the same seat as a "Howard Baker-style centrist," whatever that means. Three well know Republican pols in the Volunteer State are running and having a pissing match over who is the biggest right wing nut job. If Corker is running as a centrist he may win as the others split the Conservative primary vote. Ford vs. Corker would at least ensure another middle of the roader in the Senate, asuuming Corker's run at the middle is honest.

I was personally hoping Ford would stick it out in the House and run for a leadership position again someday... The Dems made a HUGE mistake by picking Pelosi over Ford and Texas Congressman Martin Frost the last time around.

I like Harold Ford Jr. Personally, I would never hold the actions of his uncle against him. That being said, I'm sure the media will play it up. I feel sorry for the guy...one day after he announces his run, his uncle is hauled out of the Capitol.

Let us not forget that to some extent you can pick your friends, and you can pick your enemies, but you don't get to pick your family.

Hey Alf,

I would argue that Ford's name recognition is undoubtedly at the same level as Bryant, Hillery, and Corker...I mean, damn, Ford is on CNN, MSNBC, and FOXNEWS about every night...
