Bye, Bye Brooks

New York Times columnists won't be available online for free much longer, but David Brooks gets in one last bit of sanity

Excuse me, guys, but this is craziness. I used to write for Newsweek. I know Mike Isikoff and the editors. And I know about liberals in the media. The people who run Newsweek are not a bunch of Noam Chomskys with laptops. Not even close. Whatever might have been the cause of their mistakes, liberalism had nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, the left side of the blogosphere has erupted with fury over the possibility that American interrogators might not have flushed a Koran down the toilet. The Nation and leftish Web sites are in a frenzy to prove that the story is probably true even if Newsweek is retracting it.

It does seem that some on the conservative side want journalists to become stenographers for the White House, eschewing any critical reporting, which can only come from anonymous sources--or people looking for new employment.

At the same time, I have noticed a lack of perspective on some left-wing sites, transparently hoping for the worst so it will reflect badly on the President--even though it can't hurt him as he won't be running for re-election.

Showing that the Qoran story might be right isn't to hurt the president from my perspective. It is to show that the demonizing of Newsweek over a story that has currently been reported - and the criticism including the White House accusing the magazine of inciting murder - seems another example of the powerful not wanting the press to report information they dislike and then working to silence the press when they do.

And who has muzzled the press, precisely?

And who has shown the story to be "Fake but Accurate(tm)?"
