The Endless Fun of Watching Congresscritters Duck

AP: Lobbyist Paid for Lawmakers' Travel

At least two aides to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and two Democratic congressmen received travel expenses initially paid by lobbyist Jack Abramoff on his credit card or by his firm, internal records of the lobbying firm show....

....DeLay's office and one of the lawmakers, Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., said they had no knowledge that Abramoff or his firm paid the expenses. The office of Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., did not return several calls seeking comment.

Zey know nothing. Nothing!

(On an absolutely tangential note, I found this fan site on the actor John Banner, who played Sergeant Schultz in Hogan's Heroes. It goes into some very small details but is notable for what it doesn't mention. Namely, that John Banner was Jewish, and spent time in a German concentration camp before being released and fleeing Nazi Occupied territory. Also, that fellow cast member Robert Clary ["Corporal LeBeau"] was deported from Paris to a concentration camp with 12 members of his family in 1942. He was the only survivor of the group.)

Good ole' Schultzie. We do his "bek, bek, bek, bek" to shoo the cats away from the door when we get home.

Reminds me a bit of the bounced check scandal in 1992, which undermined confidence in the Democratic Congress

Democrats caved in to pressure to release the names of all 296 members and 59 former members of Congress who had kited checks.

That was overblown, but it symbolized an arrogance which the Democratic leadership never recovered from.

DeLay is deep in this. My hope is that he'll go down. The problem is--as proven by this article--the Democrats aren't smelling so clean at the moment either.

When everyone's sleepin' with the same ho, who gets to point the finger at whom?

Reminds me a bit of the bounced check scandal in 1992...

Yeah, it is acquiring a bit of that odor, isn't it? The guilty were everywhere, but the majority party took the worst hit when the anti-incumbent wave swept through. I wish I could dig out a list of the offenders, it would be funny to see how many are still in office. Barbara Boxer leaps to mind.

For my part, I don't care how many House Democrats go down as long as Tom DeLay bursts into a tearful resignation speech in the well of the House like Jim Wright. Heck, I'd almost give up the filibuster on judicial nominees for that.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the House switch hands...I think a huge anti-incumbency wave would be good for the country. I have but one request...please don't let Nancy Pelosi be speaker!

Hopefully both parties will be destroyed in this mess so the American people will wake up, demand their heads, and we'll get some real reform for these criminals. I say get rid of the the lot of them and start over.
