Rather Departs, Cronkite Returns

The 88 year old will be blogging, thanks to Arianna Huffington's new venture

Having prominent people join the blogosphere, Ms. Huffington said in an interview, "is an affirmation of its success and will only enrich and strengthen its impact on the national conversation." Among those signed up to contribute are Walter Cronkite, David Mamet, Nora Ephron, Warren Beatty, James Fallows, Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Maggie Gyllenhaal, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Diane Keaton, Norman Mailer and Mortimer B. Zuckerman. "This gives me a chance to sound off with a few words or a long editorial," said Mr. Cronkite, 88, the longtime "CBS Evening News" anchorman. "It's a medium that is new and interesting, and I thought I'd have some fun."

Somehow, I doubt that Rather will follow Cronkite into the blogosphere.

And your introductory comment is not Ageist because?

I'm one of those who signed up to be notified when she goes online, but I'm not sure what to think of Arianna's latest undertaking. I mean, if these were truly brilliant thinkers who had never been offered a platform before..., but a lot of these names just look like a re-hash of the Hollywood/MSM types that are always ranting about something. I guess this will just centralize their rants.

In case there's any doubt, my comment is age-positive. I think it's wonderful that an 88 year old is willing to try something new. My father lived until 89, but I don't think he would have been able to handle blogging after 85!

Notherbob, we shouldn't begin to think you are either a troll or simply one to imagine offense at the drop of a hair because..... _?_

It's nice to see that Arianna is interested in having a real diversity of opinion there. Gee, I'm sure there will be some real disagreements there, for example, is Bush more like Hitler or Himmler? Are conservatives evil or simply stupid?

Well by golly if Arriana's behind it you can count me in!!!

My parents taught me to never discuss three things in public: religion, politics, and sex.

They also instilled within me the old saying, "If you can't say something nice about someone (in public) don't say anything at all."

These are very personal opinions to be kept within the home, otherwise one becomes a member of a "Spit and Argue Club, which is very low-class.

This is how I have led my life for 72 years and their advice has done me well.

Celebrities are no different from the rest of us except they usually have much more money.
