April 25, 2005Dueling ConservatismsAndrew Sullivan describes the dueling factions of "conservatism." Crisis of Faith: HOW FUNDAMENTALISM IS SPLITTING THE GOP Let me be rash and describe the fundamental divide within conservatism as a battle between two rival forms. The two forms I'm referring to are ideal types. I know very few conservatives who fit completely into one camp or the other; and these camps do not easily comport with the categories we have become used to deploying--categories like "libertarian," "social conservative," "paleoconservative," "fiscal conservative and social liberal," and so on. There is, I think, a deeper rift, and a more fundamental one....Call one the conservatism of faith and the other the conservatism of doubt. Sully may not have quite hit it out of the park, but he's sure as heck rounding third with a lead. Posted by Tully at April 25, 2005 10:23 AMComments
Today’s WaPo finally takes off the gloves and declares war. Andrew Sullivan and the other carefully orchestrated liberals believe that they have found the key to splitting the coalition that defeated them in 2004. Count on them to pull out all stops in their effort to split the evangelicals from the others. If they succeed they will have the votes to impose the liberal paradigm on America and we will all be living on campus. Will most centrists see through this cynical effort? I bet they do and it backfires on the liberals, but not without some scary moments. Expect Hollywood to weigh in heavily. Posted by: Notherbob2 at April 25, 2005 02:40 PMSorry this should work for WaPo article. Posted by: Notherbob2 at April 25, 2005 02:44 PMI'm about to read the article...but just wanted to make a point first...I wouldn't consider Andrew a "liberal." Posted by: AH at April 25, 2005 02:46 PMRead the WaPo article, and thought it eloquent and well written. Posted by: stephanie at April 25, 2005 02:58 PMNotherbob2, We centrists find it extremely irritating to be tarred as liberals whenever we disagree with conservatives. AS has identified as a conservative, but yes, he dissents enough to be excommunicated from conservatism. However, he takes many positions that are anethemas to liberals, so he's not a liberal either. He's a centrist--and I wish he would self-identify as one. On the substance, I think the Republicans may have gotten more than they bargained for by inviting former southern Democrats into their party. These were never small government people--except when the government was pushing civil rights. If they take over, small government Republicans may be politically homeless. Rick...as a Southerner--former D--I couldn't agree more. The South is not an "smaller government" stronghold. The GOP has used the moral issue to gain a stronghold here. As the party has become increasingly southern, it has shifted to a "big government" party. "Lock up the gays, but keep sending the monthly check!" Posted by: AH at April 25, 2005 04:32 PMAndrew Sullivan and the other carefully orchestrated liberals believe that they have found the key to splitting the coalition that defeated them in 2004.Bob; Speaking as a Republican I don't think James Dobson has been duped by the left. I think he's perfectly capable of stirring up a hornets nest without the Dems help. This is healthy for the Republican Party. Posted by: c3 at April 25, 2005 07:44 PM Or maybe Andrew Sullivan is just "Andrew Sullivan." I mean, why should we need to apply an artificial label of liberal, conservative, or centrist when it won't change who he really is or what positions he advocates on various issues. I just think the whole need to label people has gotten out of hand. Posted by: Bobby at April 26, 2005 01:16 AM[applauding] Posted by: Tully at April 26, 2005 01:32 AMI think Notherbob2 is pulling our legs here. Posted by: MWS at April 26, 2005 09:51 AMMe too, Marc. I think he's trolling for amusement. Or maybe he's punishing us all for Rick's sinful ageism in the Cronkite thread below. Posted by: bk at April 26, 2005 11:25 AM |
