April 18, 2005Henry Hyde RetiringIllinois Republican representative Henry Hyde used the occasion of his 81st birthday to announce that he's retiring at the end of his term in 2006. Hyde has been in the House for 30 years, and is one of its most senior and influential Republicans. Anyone who knows his district care to comment on the odds of a moderate Dem being able to take the seat? Or even a moderate Republican? Inquiring non-Illini minds want to know! I don't know a lot about Ill. But I've read recently that Democrats were planning to target Hyde, even though he's such a long-time incumbent. I think the GOP viewed him as one of their most vulnerable incumbents too. Illinois is becoming more and more Democrat -- even outside of the cities. Posted by: Stygius at April 19, 2005 10:47 AM |
