April 13, 2005Cracks in ChinaThousands of Chinese Villagers Protest Factory Pollution Rumors of massive riots in China, brutally repressed, have been making their way into the West for the last few years, and seem to be sharply increasing in frequency. We think of China as a strongly controlled dictatorship, but it's not. China has suffered massive political upheaval periodically over thousands of years, and there's no reason to think that anything has changed under Communism. Indeed, the current situation, with a rapidly growing capitalist private sector and a repressive and relentlessly corrupt communist public sector, seems almost designed to breed unrest. What's next?
