March 29, 2005SullivanismThe Evangelical Outpost discusses whether Andrew Sullivan is a conservative. I consider him to be a centrist who is a conservative wannabe. If he was not gay, he would more comfortably fit into the conservative mode (indeed, he'd probably be a candidate for the Tory leadership in the UK). As it is, he is somewhat alienated from the community which he wants to be a part of. Posted by rickheller at March 29, 2005 03:49 PMComments
I' m not going to claim him as ours unless he wants to quit his club and join ours, although I agree he's a sterling enough critical thinker that he'd make a splendid member. He's a conservative. A libertarian conservative. It's just that he's not a partisan. I refuse to participate in anything that serves to diminish his cred as a genuine conservative. He has the props, he hasn't strayed. Others have strayed. It is these others who should be ex-communicated. Posted by: bk at March 29, 2005 03:59 PMSullivan is more of a libertarian (“small L” )than he wants to admit. I don’t think simply supporting the war and occasionally whining about the tax rates makes him a conservative. Posted by: Alf at March 29, 2005 04:10 PMI'd just prefer to classify him as a "thinker." Posted by: AH at March 29, 2005 04:32 PMI've always though of Sullivan as sui generis Posted by: Tully at March 29, 2005 05:13 PM |
