A Weblog of Centrist Voices in American Politics |

March 14, 2005Blogger Conference CallOur national voice chat didn't quite work out tecnically, as many were not able to use the VoIP on yahoo chat. Now, some liberal bloggers have used an old fashioned conference call (I wonder who paid for it) and apparently got some real journalists to call in
It's rather frustrating that we centrists keep getting overlooked. As far as I know, the press release that I distributed after our first chat was not picked up by any outlets, though I did get follow-up emails from the San Jose Mercury News and the Dallas Morning News. Update: There's more info on Bob Fertik's blog. He was the organizer of the call. They rules for the conference call are on blogcall.org They used FreeConference, which is not quite free, but might be cheap. Comments
You should look into podcasting. It's a way to get an audio file onto the MP3 players and iPods of thousands of eager listeners in a matter of a few hours. I took a 2 minute clip of the lefty conference call the NY Times refers to, and included it in my podcast today, at about 10:15 into the program. I read blog posts of the top bloggers every day into an MP3 file, and people subscribe using RSS to get the show downloaded to their portable music players automatically. If you have an audio file that you want to distribute, don't email it to the newspaper, podcast it. Podcasting is a technology that is kind of like Tivo for radio. You don't need an iPod to listen, just visit my blog and click on the MP3 link. Give it a listen if you get a minute.. Hear what the NY Times says is coherent progressive dialog. These guys are raving consipracy theorists. We could really use a more centrist voice to counteract this set of nutcases. Charlie Hi Rick, Thanks for the mention! FreeConference.com is free for the organizer (up to 100 participants) but the participants all have to dial a long-distance number. Good luck with your efforts! Bob Posted by: bob fertik at March 14, 2005 02:40 PMIt's rather frustrating that we centrists keep getting overlooked I agree, and I think it's a symptom of a much larger problem. Centrists are all over the place. By that I mean there is no cohesive network linking centrists with each other, except on a very small scale (such as this website). Proof of this is in the many centrist party attempts out there, each oblivious of the other. And with the one exception of the Independence Party in Minnesota, none of these start-ups have much of a following or a network. I would propose that the next topic for discussion at the Centrist Townhall chat be to form a strategy for linking centrists not just with internet links but also personally wihtin cities. I mean, to tell you the truth, I'm pretty sure there's more than four centrists in Boston. This, I think, is an important first step that has been over-looked. It's great if we have ideas, but if we're not taken seriously (or even considered) as a group with a distinct idea, we won't get the coverage we need to get those ideas out past the blogsphere. Posted by: Art at March 14, 2005 03:38 PMI have used freeconferencecall.com. It's easy to use. Seems to me that Art is on the right track. I know that the CC membership has been growing but the key to getting some real movement is numbers. Posted by: Jack at March 14, 2005 03:55 PMVery good idea, Rick. I sense even from our fledgling efforts that actually talking to one another would be pretty energizing for us. Posted by: William Swann at March 14, 2005 05:29 PM |
