All they have to do now is explain the part about how this would benefit incumbents. :-) I wonder, has anyone outside MA heard anything about how our state's recently retired house speaker faces indictment in an investigation into corrupt redistricting. bk: I haven't heard about it... But does your former Speaker have the state legislature trying to keep your state's investigative body from investigating it..a la DeLay? Posted by: carla at March 8, 2005 03:25 PMbk; Former Speaker Tom Finneran, a Democrat, as is everyone around here except Mitt Romney. Finneran was a conservative Democrat, pro-life, unpopular with liberals. He left the speakership on his own accord, but it's thought that he's trying for a soft landing in the wake of the probe. Posted by: rickheller at March 8, 2005 04:24 PMFormer speaker Tom Finneran (D) was called to testify regarding redistricting shenanigans, and under oath he claimed to have no involvement or direct knowledge regarding the division of spoils during redistricting. They're subpoenaing other principals, and Finneran could get charged with obstruction of justice if others testify he was lying and playing dumb. I have no direct knowledge of it, but there have been a number of stories in the past regarding his alleged cronyism and convenient timing, and Fineran has always played dumb or protested incidence. It makes one wonder how many times one could see smoke without there being a fire. I'm sure Finneran has buddies in power on his side, but the fact that he's already moved on probably means that he can't rely on loyalty now that he has yielded his scepter. MA politicians play hardball, and the "what have you done for me lately" credo is in effect. Not to mention that he earned many enemies with his autocratic style, and everyone knows that revenge is a dish best served cold. But in MA it's not a partisn isue per se, since most of the reps are democrats. In this case I believe it's a story of losing a district and re-carving to help out inner circle buddies and leave someone else SOL Posted by: bk at March 9, 2005 07:55 AM |
