February 04, 2005Iraqis Fight Back Against TerroristsThe Iraqi police have investigated a case in the village of al-Mudhariya, which is just south of Baghdad. The villagers there say that before the election insurgents came and warned them that if they voted in last weekend's election, they would pay. Link via InstaPundit; emphasis mine. "It would appear that people are getting sick of the insurgency," says reporter Mark Willacy. "I understand, though, that this is the first report of Iraqis confronting insurgents and actually fighting back in such a way." Let's hope it's not the last. Amen! This seemed to be coming for a while now. I don't think we can reliably read into it that these villagers are therefore supportive of Bush's agenda for Iraq, though. I would imagine many of them probably see working with the system rather than against it as the most pragmatic way to get complete control of their country back, and I would agree. I can easily see them getting pissed off at the insurgents for making it all the more difficult for them, leading to this particular batch of insurgents fate. Posted by: Kevin at February 5, 2005 12:38 AMI would agree that this is not as much a victory for the Bush doctrine as it is for decent people. It's about time they fought back. Posted by: Art at February 5, 2005 01:18 AMRealistically, we would be stupid to expect any more than pragmatic tolerance of our continued presence from Iraqis. We shouldn't hold our breath waiting for a parade and a thank-you note signed by millions. Some true-believer neocons might have expected this, but I doubt most smart people did, and I don't think Bush thought this would be easy. Bush haters miscast his postive statements as proof of his cluelessness, but I don't think he's THAT stupid. This is a victory for decent people. And my hopes have always been for them. Of course, we should not make any conclusions about trends based on one story, but it sure is hopeful. As far as the "Bush doctrine" goes, if Iraq someday become some sort of representative democracy, history puts it into the win column for him. Posted by: bk at February 5, 2005 01:52 PMBrian, speaking of Iraqi democracy... I just posted something over at PK on the subject which I've been mulling over for some time now. I'd be interested in your thoughts. http://www.preemptivekarma.com/archives/2005/02/iraq_democracy.html Posted by: Kevin at February 6, 2005 04:01 AM |
