December 26, 2004Ukrainian electionJeff Goldblum has a line in Jurassic Park that has always stuck with me. B. D. Wong (Henry Wu): You are saying that a group of animals, entirely composed of females, will breed? I don't believe that democracy is inevitable in the same way that evolution is inevitable, but I do believe that, whenever possible, democracy will eventually find a way. The reality is that since 1974 the number of democracies in the world has tripled, from 40 to about 120. Culminating in today's events, democracy is finding a way in Ukraine. Yushchenko appears to be headed to a landslide victory in the "do-over" election. Congratulations to the people of Ukraine; you are an inspiration for democratic forces everywhere. But it's certainly not a smooth ride.... Yanukovich refuses to accept defeat Yanukovych does not choose to go quietly into that good night. "It can't be a legitimate election--I didn't win!" Posted by: Tully at December 27, 2004 02:16 PMHurrah! Some People actually earning their freedom. Good for them! Posted by: Ratatosk at December 27, 2004 02:18 PMFirst shot of a civil war,or simply eliminating a political liability? The Ukranian Transport Minister Heorhiy Kyrpa has been found dead from gunshot wounds outside of his home. Posted by: Bob J Young at December 27, 2004 07:28 PMWell, no, he was found inside his home with a gun found near the body. If he was murdered, at least it wasn't in the rain. Posted by: Tully at December 27, 2004 08:08 PMWell its always possible it was a suicide, but if it was a suicide I would think they wouldn’t have said “wounds”. Unless he was a really bad shot. Posted by: Bob J Young at December 27, 2004 08:19 PMOops! I remember a few shootings of drug thieves in LA being called "drive-by suicides..." Maybe he wouldn't eat his dioxin. Posted by: Tully at December 27, 2004 09:57 PMWhat occured in the Ukraine is outstanding. However, we can't get ahead of ourselves. Yes, it is great that democracy will flourish. But no citizens in totalitarian countries should look at this and think "we can get together and create democracy"... lest the dictator have them killed. As for Ukraine, it is an outstanding development because it takes the Vladimir Putin's knees out from under him. In lieu of twenty years of Russian and American leaders working hand in hand for democracy and a better world, Putin would run the sickle and hammer back up the flag pole tommorrow if he could. If anyone thinks I am kidding, I am not. The other day, Fox had someone from an organization on and they have recently reclassified Russia from "a partially free nation" to "not free." Putin has tired to change the way governors are elected and he has taken over television and newspapers. This man doesnt want communism. He wants to run the whole thing. Tonight, ITN was reporting a possible grouping of Russia, China, and other cold war hold outs as a formation of a "son of the cold war." I beg to differ with the President when he says I have looked into Putin's eyes and seen his good soul. If Putin has a soul at all, I wuold think it isnt good. This is why the events in Ukraine are such a watershed moment. The orange clad seeking democracy stared into the face of a democracy thwarting abomination and they beat it back. Congrats to them. Posted by: Raymond Smalley at December 27, 2004 10:58 PMThe Ukrainian central election commission has certified the results, and we have a winner! Yushchenko, leader of the democratic opposition, took 51.99 percent compared with 44.19 percent for Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich. I want the licensing rights for ORANGE POWER t-shirts....how do you spell that in Ukrainian? :-) Posted by: Tully at December 28, 2004 10:48 AMA followup on Ukranian Transport Minister Heorhiy Kyrpa, and his death. Krypa was heavily involved in, and expected to be indicted for, the massive voter fraud in the first election round. He was accused of shipping literally trainloads of Yanukovych voters from town to town to vote in multiple polling places. Reports indicate he was found dead in his dacha, shot in the head, with a gun next to his body. Homicide or suicide, it's still not terribly startling. Posted by: Tully at December 28, 2004 05:04 PMit seems that i am visiting another blog page instead of going there where i wanted to go but, however, its not my view here. Let's think about the comments which reveals something different and u can also take a look on your own webblog page and judge if it is really good for ur website or not. If it is, then, its okay. However, my friend u have developed this webblog with very reasonable layouts and deep thinking. Really, its great and appreciable. Thanks. |
