Tsunami

An earthquake underneath the Indian Ocean produces a tidal wave. The Washington Post's Michael Dobbs was caught in it, and is lucky to be alive.

I would not be surprised if - when all is said and done - this is the greatest natural disaster of my lifetime. I read somewhere today that the earthquake caused huge waves all the way to Africa, and that several deaths were reported in Somalia.

Unbelievable. Unfortunately, it is likely to be off the front pages within a week.

In April 1991, Bangladesh was devastated by a cyclone that left about 140,000 citizens dead or missing.

It's already been pushed off the lead two stories on google news.

I stand corrected. What stands out for me this time is that the dead or missing are spread out across so many countries.

This kind of thing can hit any coastline on the planet. The east coast of North America has had a nasty little secret for years, in the form of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma.

Thanks so very much for taking your time to create this very useful and informative site. I have learned a lot from your site. Thanks!! I think you have done an excellent job with your site. I will return in the near future. You're never alone when you're online. There's always someone out there that feels the way you do, whether you're depressed or happy, confused or proud. If I were to stumble across someone's journal where they express feeling exactly the same way I do at the moment, I might drop them a line to tell them they're not alone. If they write about feeling terrible about a problem that I have dealt with in the past I might offer words of encouragement. And if they write about how ecstatic they are because of something great that's happening in their lives I'll congratulate them.
