Sixty Years Ago....

The Battle of the Bulge began.

Nuts.

My father was there, as a medic in evacuation hospital behind the lines. Due to the German advance, the hospital was overrun. My Dad's commanding officer was killed, and some nurses were captured. I believe they were freed in the counterattack. It's good that the Germans have shaped up since then.

A hero remembers the Battle of the Bulge

Rick,

In my book, your Dad was a hero too.

Thanks, but seriously, not as much as your uncle. Dad was never on the front line until the Wehrmacht brought the front line to him.

I tend toward the view that the Battle of the Bulge ultimately shortened the war. Hitler was hoping for some sort of split between the Allies that I guess would cause them to negotiate. That was totally unrealistic and, as horrific a battle as it was, the German attack exposed most of their remaining armor to Allied air power once the weather cleared. I suspect that the advance into Germany would have been much slower and more costly without the Battle of the Bulge.
