Conservative Blogger Compliments Clinton

Really. Powerline and the Washington Times see Sen. Clinton as more conservative than the President on immigration. I too agree that immigration issues have not gotten the kind of reasoned debate that they deserve. It the race for the loyalty of new voters, even the Republicans have gotten PC on immigration.

Pres. Bush supports the concepts outlined by the Arizona delegation (i.e. some sort of worker certification and not a blanket amnesty). I'm not sure that qualifies as more liberal than Clinton.. Did Clinton have a policy?

This is a huge issue for border states due to the costs of immigrant care. I know regardless of any change there will continue to be many illegal immigrants. Blanket amnesty didn't work.

By the way the "anti-immigrant proposition" (Prop 200)that passed in AZ this fall (in spite of opposition by ALL significant Republicans in AZ) was supported by almost 50% of Hispanics in AZ. Therefore, politically we continue to operate on two incorrect assumptions 1) any restriction of immigration will be a strong negative to hispanic voters 2) any restriction of immigration will likely get Republican support.
