Purple America

This is a pretty cool little map that Professor Robert Vanderbei at Princeton University created. It depicts county by county results of the 2004 presidential election. Each county's color is an RBG mix in porportion to the election results for that county. This map is much less red than the one on the TV on election night.

These maps are an interesting phenomenom. We search for the right picture to convey the "real situation". Doesn't 52% to 48% convey a nearly even split?

I posted something very similar recently. I think 52-48 both conveys and conceals. It's not 52-48 in every state or county, and that's the point. Some placer are bluer or redder than others, even inside each state.

I snicker everytime I see this... Sort of a Democratic act of desperation to prove that things are not as bad for them as they appear.
