November 18, 2004A Backbone in the Moderate Republican CaucusAccording to this article in the Chicago Tribune, Rep. Mark Kirk is the new co-chair of the House Republican Mainstream Tuesday Group, a group of 35 moderate Republicans in the House. To get a sense for their level of determination, consider what they did in the voice vote yesterday over the rules change that helped Delay. Kirk and Shays seem to have organized quite a little rebellion. Kirk is among the boldest of the centrists. He's quite conservative on economic and fiscal issues, from taxes to trade to Social Security reform. He also favored the Iraq war and the reconstruction funds. On the other hand, he's strongly pro-choice and co-sponsored the effort to outlaw employment discrimination against gays. And he supported campaign finance reform. He is the very model of a bold centrist, with distinct policy preferences and a determination to see them enacted. Now he's helping corral the troops in the House. Awesome. He is a young buck also... Some of these moderate Republicans are from the Nixon-era, literally. Kirk is a good face for the moderate GOP and I am glad to see him become their leader. Although I think the debate over this rule is supid I am also glad to see an organized centrist effort... It is something that has been lacking. Posted by: Mathew at November 18, 2004 04:48 PMThanks for sharing this positive development, Bill. Posted by: Jamie at November 18, 2004 06:08 PMI am an independent Deomcrat who is concerned that reactionary Republicans are hijacking America. I've always admired middle-of-the-road Republicans who respect deomocracy. Tell me more about Centerfield. Thank you. Posted by: loren at November 29, 2004 05:53 PM |
