November 18, 2004An Excellent Take on the Cultural SplitDean Esmay has an excellent piece this morning on the cultural split between liberals and conservatives that's well worth reading. Growing up spending equal time between rural Texas and urban Chicago gives him a rather unique perspective on the differences. It might also explain why it is that his political viewpoint is now fairly moderate. I can relate to that. I was raised by fundamentally religious, conservative parents in a culturally liberal state. Those two conflicting factors influenced me in different ways, but also allowed me to appreciate the value of different points of view. Posted by Heather at November 18, 2004 11:21 AMComments
Thank you, Heather. I went on to read the Walden article. I found both to be enlightening. Posted by: Jamie at November 18, 2004 12:09 PMThanks, Heather. A most excellent pair of articles. Folks, don't read the Esmay without reading the Walden! If you must skip one, go directly to the Walden. Posted by: Tully at November 18, 2004 12:33 PMAbsolutely concur. Both great pieces, and I really truly enjoyed the Waldman article. It was honest and insightful, and might even do some actual good. I think we should make this a permanent bookmark to send people to when they ask about what a centrist is. If you're a centrist, you really should understand and try to honor the points this guy makes. Posted by: bk at November 18, 2004 12:59 PMGreat point, bk. Posted by: Jamie at November 18, 2004 01:14 PMWaldman, not Walden--the dyslexic fingers and phonetic brain strike again. Posted by: Tully at November 18, 2004 01:15 PMIt was my mistake first. :) Posted by: Jamie at November 18, 2004 01:36 PMAgree with above, excellent articles. I guess extreme voices are always louder and get more attention. Posted by: Chris at November 18, 2004 11:46 PM |
