November 11, 2004Specter on ModeratesHoward Bashman's How Appealing has a link to this Philadelphia Inquirer interview with Senator Arlen Specter. The most relevant section is excerpted below. "It's important for the party but it's also important to the country that the Republican Party has balance," Specter said. "And there are a lot of independents and swing Democrats who look to see that there are moderate voices in the Republican Party."Posted by The Jaded JD at November 11, 2004 08:14 AM Comments
I wonder if he's stripped of his chairmanship, whether he'd consider becoming an Independent Posted by: rickheller at November 11, 2004 12:22 PMI think that's very unlikely, mostly because unlike the Jim Jeffords situation in 2000, there's no way he can alter the chamber's control. When Jeffords switched, he was given the Education Committee chairmanship the GOP stripped from him by the Democrats when the switch gave them control. Specter wins nothing by disaffiliating, unless he takes 4 or 5 with him. Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, McCain, and Gregg aren't going to switch. Yet. Posted by: The Jaded JD at November 11, 2004 12:56 PMI just had a chill run up my back as I read that last sentence JD. Suddenly I saw a group of enough moderate Republicans who could, if they chose, become a swing block in the Senate and thereby gain tremendous influence, whether or not they jumped the Republican ship in name. Could be something to watch in the next few years. Posted by: jmauzy at November 12, 2004 09:38 AMJeff, Now you're where I am. We're gaining critical mass. But we have to learn how to recognize when we've gotten critical mass before we're picked off. Posted by: The Jaded JD at November 12, 2004 05:54 PMSpecter will get the chair. Grumpy conservatives just made a point on a slow news day. Posted by: wizard61 at November 14, 2004 01:33 AM |
