October 30, 2004Sex Offenders In OregonI vaguely heard of Rep. David Wu's troubles, stemming from the allegation of improper behavior during his college years, which turns out to be an allegation of attempted rape. I totally missed this story about former Portland Mayor, Oregon Governor, and Carter Administration Cabinet Secretary Neil Goldschmidt admitting to having had sex many years ago with a babysitter, a case of statuatory rape which is now beyond the statute of limitations. Both politicians happen to be Democrats, but Oregon Democrats can point to Bob Packwood to show that bad behavior is bipartisan in their state. This stuff about Wu is disturbing. He is a good Congressman and a good centrist. If I where in his district I would have voted for him, but now he may lose to a very conservative Republican. Wu isn't going to lose. I live in his district and I've seen the way things are going down here. Ameri has thrown up a hail Mary with the ads on Wu...and it's backfired against her.
