Political Violence Ahead?

The attempted rundown of Rep. Katherine Harris is no laughing matter. Political violence around elections is the first step toward becoming a banana republic. Will violent rhetoric spill over into physical acts? 2000 was flukey, and odds are the election of 2004 won't be quite so close. But if it is, the Miami-Dade bourgeois riot of 2000 may only be a foretaste of what's to come.

I think there will be a riot in Seattle.
That's where all those thuggish anti-globalist protesters went wild a few times. They just like an excuse to riot.

I have become very emotional about this election because of its' importance.

But, as I watched the Rodney King riots in 1992 and mayhem after many sporting events, I made up my mind that riots were just a bunch of ignoramuses looking for an excuse to loot.

Now if I see an organized movement that advocates violence as a political protest like what we saw in the 60s, I might give it some credence. Otherwise, these people look like thugs.

What idiot thought that reminding us of Katherine Harris via a hit and run attempt made any sense? It's a name I should have never learned and one I don't want to be reminded of in this election.

Susan,

They went wild one time.

Being from Seattle and working across the street from the WTO meetings at the time, I can tell you that a good majority of the people that rioted in the city where NOT from Seattle. They in large part came into Seattle from other areas of the West Coast.... Berkeley, Eugene, etc. I am not saying that no resident of the city is responsible for taking part, but it simply isn't truthful to blame an entire city that was the target of many people who did not live in that city. It is my impression that a great majority of Seattleites in large part found the actions of the rioters to be diplorable. I know what you meant, but if you are from Seattle or lived there at the time, this is a touchy subject. Furthermore, the violence not only was due to the actions of "protestors" but to an over zealous, and under trained police force. Personally, as someone who was a part of a group of people that worked in the city and took no part in the riots, many of us where shot with rubber bullets, gassed, etc. for simply trying to get to our bus stop.

The police in Seattle were not zealous enough. Every one of those rioting thugs should have been caught and sent to prison. Set an example for future rioters to give them pause.

I will now tell you exactly why I picked Seattle for the location of the post-election riots, perhaps you will agree it is a very good reason.

A post-election riot is already being called for and planned in Seattle.

"If Bush gets reelected on November 2--if half of our fellow citizens lose their minds, or if he manages to steal the election again--storming Seattle's federal offices, prisons, and property will let him know that we're not going down without a fight this time. Here's a list of federal sites in Seattle that could be perfect places to protest: [...] Bring some eggs. "

I think people are seriously exaggerating the extent of violence occurring. Any violence is bad, of course, but I don't think you are going to see rioting in the streets. Just become some lunatic fringe is advocating doesn't mean that this will be like storming of the Bastille. Most of this is from extreme partisans who are letting their emotions run away from them. You have violence in this country when sports teams when championships. It doesn't mean that we need to put moats around the fields.

Anyone who votes on Tuesday should be prepared to die.

Osama has warned you.

There will be violence.
