1967 World Series Rematch

Okay. It's Cardinals vs. Red Sox. This leaves me with mixed feelings. I want the Red Sox to win, but my first favorite baseball team was the Cardinals. This is because I became interested in baseball and collecting baseball cards in 1968, and the champion the previous year was the Cardinals. Growing up in New Jersey, I had little interest in the New York teams, so I gravitated to the team with Bob Gibson and Lou Brock.

I still have some of the Topps 1967 World Series cards. In the interest of my new loyalties, I present an image of one of the games the Red Sox won

This is a true story, but I wonder if you guys will believe it.

Rico Petrocelli was my favorite player when I was a kid. I got an autographed picture of him when I inadvertently met him at a Home Depot last year. Prior to Game 7, I put this picture in my briefbag and carried it around with me for luck. I still have it.

Thanks Rico, you brought us luck.

Man, St. Louis fielded a good team that year. It's frightening how much talent they had.

A friend of mine is a talk show host on one of our local "all sports" radio stations. Whenever he strays into political discussions (which is very frequent) the calls start flooding in to the effect that "this is a sports network and I want to hear about sports."

My point, I guess, is that I am glad to see the digression from politics into sports in a few posts this week.

The way I figure it, we talk about the news. When a sports story is big enough to grab front page headlines in the newspaper, it's natural for us to talk about it too.

When I was growing up, the World Series was played during the day and we sneaked radios into school to listen. The World Series was truly a national event even if you weren't a big baseball fan. Now, it's the overhyped, over marketed Super Bowl. With the Red Sox in, I'm glad to see the World Series regaining some of its stature (but it will never be like it was.)
