Comments Close After 7 Days

Entries on this blog will have their "Post A Comment" box disabled after 7 days. After deleting more than 40,000 spam comments using mt-blacklist, we got another 2000 spam comments over the weekend. Most of these are hitting old entry, where no active discussion is going on.

Since conversations in individual posts rarely last more than 7 days, it seems reasonable to me to close entries after one week. Note that this is a semi-manual process (using mt-close), so sometimes entries may stay open beyond the 7 day period. Entries can be re-opened, if necessary. To request this, email me at blog @ centrist coalition . com with a link to the entry.

Also, once again I need to purge spam comments. I'll try to spare real comments from real people, but if I delete one of yours by accident, you have my apologies in advance. Hopefully, once comments are closed on old entries, I won't have to do this very frequently.

That seems reasonable to me.

You're doing an excellent job, Rick.

Man Rick...your job sucks.

These kids should take you out for drinks and dames after all your hard work. :)

Sounds good! (hope there's some automation involved!)

I went and cleaned and closed out some old threads about a month ago, and was surprised to find an awful of spam.

What's more, the two postings that mentioned N*d$r were alot more spammed than the others.
A rather surprising spam-target....

P.S.: can I help write a script to automate this further?

Posted by: Jon Kay at October 19, 2004 10:29 PM

Jon,

Thanks for the offer. It's probably automated enough. I just need to remember to do it. Then the only thing more to do would be to create a cron job. Not really necessary.

If there is a need to run it, or to clean out some spam, just mention it in the open thread and I'll run the scripts.

If only he lived in the 'hood, he and spouse would be well rewarded.

Kudos, Rick. And thanks.

Thanbks a ton for staying on top of this Rick. You da man. Let's have lunch again soon.

Closing threads after a week seems very reasonable to me. I don't want to create more work for you, but maybe the closing of the comments could be accompanied by a message suggesting late posters follow up in the weekly open thread if want to pursue something.

Even if this is too onerous or cumbersome to do, I think that picking up with an old idea in the weekly open thread is a good place for people to go if they want to join the conversation late. II don't go back to threads more than a few days old except in very rare instances.
