October 08, 2004Breathless Sighs on the WayIn a thread yesterday I talked about how I thought the networks were going to start the rumbling on voting irregularities so that they could treat us to breathless on-the-scene stories about voter cheating. It's starting: Mindful of the controversy over the Florida presidential vote count in 2000, NBC News will try to highlight any Election Day voting irregularities on Nov. 2 with a project called "Making Your Vote Count." The network said that it will have exclusive broadcast access to results from the nonpartisan Voter Alert Line, which will let voters call a toll-free number nationwide on Election Day to report irregularities at their polling locations. There's been talk lately of the blogosphere's role in relation to the mainstream press. Watchdog sure fits here. This is a great story for the media to cover if they don't do it with a ratings bias for breathless reportage of sketchy anecdotes, where sober-looking reporters can report unsubstantiated things by using interviewees as dupes and then saying the story is unconfirmed but "we're looking into it." What I want is an insistence on confirmation. And I think we need another hotline for people to report that nothing untoward went on when they voted. If the media gives the impression that chicanery is common and widespread by focusing on a few instances with sketchy support, we should hang 'em high.
