The O'Centrist Factor

Shot In The Dark is not happy to discover that Bill O'Reilly has centrist inclinations. On 60 Minutes,

He said he is pro-gun control, against the death penalty, for civil unions and for gay adoption (as a last resort instead of state custody). And O'Reilly said he's not necessarily voting for President Bush this November.

"I've known (Democratic presidential nominee John) Kerry for 25 years. He's a patriot. I'm listening to what he has to say," he tells Wallace.

I frequently listen to the Radio Factor, and it's evident to me that O'Reilly is a center-right swing voter. Bashing him may be good for the careers of some liberal pundits, but his listeners (he's up against Limbaugh on radio, so he doesn't get the real dittoheads) are exactly the people Democrats need to attract to regain their majority status.

If Bush pulls away as he threatens to do, I expect O'Reilly will follow. But if Kerry closes on Bush, it's possible that O'Reilly could swing his way--and claim to be the kingmaker if Kerry wins.

IMO, OReilly, if a centrist, qualifies as a bad centrist. If hs vote is truly up for grabs should he have the opportunity to cast himelf as a kingmaker, he's a disgrace.

But then in my opinion he probably is anyway. His limited and occasional common sense insights are not worthwhile enough for me to overlook that he's a bully and mentally stubborn, more prone to reflexively defending his views than to participate in genuine give and take. He's proof that you don't have to get to 530 to be an ahole. The fact that his self-interest lies so strongly in controversy, entertainment, and preaching to what he views as his peculiar choir is really the biggest problem.

BK!!!

It's nice to see that you and I can find some common ground every once in awhile.

Nice take on O'Reilly.

Btw...the Daily Show is kicking his ass. LOL

Well, they may not be the straight story either, but at least you get to laugh, ya know?

When I channel surf on radio and tv and I go past these guys, a little alarm goes off in my head that says "this person is getting paid a lot of money to make you angry, because if you get angry you'll keep watching."

I don't like people who WANT to make me mad at just about any cost. I don't have to get angry to care or to understand. In fact it mkaes it harder for me to care and understand.

When you truly understand that the content and the tone is driven by ratings, the sea parts.

I saw the snippets of the O'Reilly interview of Bush that The Daily Show aired. He seemed to be fawning, althought these were only very brief portions -- I have not seen the interview.

Yet, I find it impossible to imagine a similar interview with Kerry -- but, I admit: maybe that's just me.

O'Reilly may be less strictly conservative than some, but I have found him to be quite partisan and literally derisive of almost any liberal or progressive. (But I admit I don't listen to him -- he makes me angry withing about 20 seconds and I turn him off. Most of what I hear/read is second hand, e.g. on Media Matters.)

O'Reilly grates. I've never bothered to figure out where he's coming from because he's simply such an obnoxious "5:30" that I never saw why I should care.

Any show that regularly features multiple partisan hacks loudly talking over each other on split-screen sends me racing for the remote. The Jerry Springer School of "News."
