Hillary Clinton, Centrist Chameleon

So says the Village Voice.

With this all-but-conceded presidential ambition as backdrop, Clinton has certainly been much more of a centrist senator than her liberal New York constituency required. She may have been even more centrist than her local base would ordinarily tolerate, given a pass partly because of her aura as right-wing obsession and left-wing pioneer, and partly because of the promise of her grand White House return.

Hillary is a politician and I mean that in a good sense in this case. Her ambition keeps her from getting too far out there. Just like Bill, she is not going to let ideology get in the way of running for president. I don't think that's necessarily bad; it suggests she is flexible enough to make necessary accomodations. Of course, liberals will accuse her of being a sellout and conservatives (and probably centrists) won't trust her. But someone like her might be an effective centrist. I'm sure her heart is to the left, as I think Bill's was, but ambition can concentrate the mind. While she would still have to appease her base, she would not be likely to embark on any wild ventures that would move her TOO FAR to the left.

Hillary not a centrist ... she is to the left of Kerry among Senators

She also has exactly zero chance of every being elected President.

"Hillary not a centrist ... she is to the left of Kerry among Senators"

You callin' Bush a liar? He's told us that Kerry is the most Liberal in the Senate. How could that be true of Hillary is to his Left?

;-)

I think Hillary's closer to the center than her critics would have us believe. Not a centrist, per se... But, neither is she a left-wing radical.
