July 28, 2004And the Sharks Begin to Circle...We've talked a lot about media bias, but when the election season gets into full swing political bias takes back seat to the greed for a scoop. And the sharks are circling..... ABC News is reporting that the Democratic Party's biggest donor is "connected," as in SOPRANOS. Officials: Democrat’s Biggest Money Man Has Mob Connections Posted by Tully at July 28, 2004 07:52 PMComments
If true it'll play Yin to the Bush/bin Laden family connection's Yang. As the world churns... Haven't seen that on ABC yet, Kevin. Veracity problem. Posted by: Tully at July 28, 2004 11:33 PMMaybe he is gambling for a Presidential pardon in the future. Someone would placed a bell to the cat so we can keep track of it! Posted by: Hectorrican at July 29, 2004 12:18 AM...guilt by association, what a great story! Posted by: bk at July 29, 2004 08:30 AMDon't shoot me, I'm just the messenger. And my point is about the sharks, not Donnie Shacks and friends, so let's skip the patellar-reflexive eye-rolling and finger-pointing. As the real campaigns get underway and the field reporters get pressed harder to come up with selling copy, we're going to see more and more stories like this one, attempts by the sharks to produce copy that sells. This is the "commercial bias" part of media bias, and it will be in full flower during the next few months. And the campaigns will pick up stories like these and use them as talking points and slander fodder. As centrists and moderates, purportedly objective people making some attempt to sort out fact from fiction, reality from propaganda, slime from substance, we should be examining the backstory on things like the Bing/Montemarano story, looking for the information that didn't show up, and examining the truth of what did. The things unsaid that change the story from a Big Deal issue to a So What echo-chamber rant, even if what is reported is completely factual and verifiable (which can be a big assumption). Context and reality versus media image. Things like Montemarano being an honorary pallbearer at Sonny Bono's funeral. Or a mention that he's in jail for parole violations after a domestic violence complaint, having already served most of his 18-year sentence. The anonymous sourcing of the vague murder allegations. What the actual extent of his "business partnership" with Bing really is--half of an ice cream cart, or millions in movie deals? Montemarano is a labor fixer--so how does that really tie in? And so on. The sharks are circling. Capisce?
