Cheney F'd Up

The Moderate Voice has an evaluation of Dick Cheney's use of the F-word as compared to John Kerry.

In my view, one difference is that Kerry used it with regard to a policy, whereas Cheney used it with regard to a person--and to his face. The latter is much more mean spirited.

Of course, if you'd suffered through someone's public abuse and continual vehement charges of corruption for months on end, and then he walked up smilin', acting like your buddy and wanting to shake your hand, you might get a wee bit "mean-spirited" youself. (That's Cheney's side of the story.)

Kerry used the "F" word in an interview he knew would be published, to insult Bush and to sound "real" for ROLLING STONE readers. ("Did I expect George Bush to f*** it up as badly as he did?") Cheney used it as a personal verbal slash in a two-way face-to-face exchange. ("Go f*** yourself!")

Yep, there's a difference. One usage was heat-of-the-moment with mutual participation and immediate right of reply, the other was calculated and time-delayed. Would you rather be cursed to your face, or behind your back? Do you prefer immediate, honest, and visceral, or honed, polished, and planted? Personal and provoked, or postured and political? Which usage is more "mean-spirited," and by what standards?

Either way, I think it's straining gnats. All gods have feet of clay.

Leahy can be a complete jerk While I do not condone Cheney, in a supposed private moment, using foul language to Leahy, I do not really blame him.

I also believe Cheney was smart to not apologize.
