June 24, 2004Immigrant ValuesThe New York Times has an article on how, at Harvard, African-Americans who are descended from immigrants outnumber African-Americans descended from American slaves. This is evidence that it is not race but values that make the difference in achievement. Immigrants come to this country with positive expectations, which they instill in their children. Too many of those born into families which have been poor for generations believe there is no opportunity for them in the United States, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Comments
No offense, but is it really news that environment and values are more important factors in potential for success than race? Posted by: Jeremy at June 24, 2004 02:52 PMI read an article suggesting that white Americans view Africans differently than they view African-Americans. In other words, their view of Africans is generally more positive than that of African-Americans. This is probably because whites are turned off by much of the culture of young African-Americans and see the Africans as "more like us" culturally. Pretty ironic.
