A Weblog of Centrist Voices in American Politics |

May 28, 2004Committee GOP Centrists Stand Strong on Abu GhraibSee this article in the Washington Post. I have to point out that as a Republican, and a centrist, I have been especially proud of Chairman John Warner, and Senators Collins, McCain, and Graham for the work they have done in the investigation of the Abu Ghraid prison abuse allegations. Brushing off what could be considered badgering from some on the right in the Republican Party, including the distinguished gentlemen from Oklahoma and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, these four have continued to ask the tough questions. As an American, who was deeply disturbed by the prison abuse scandal, I am thankful that we have individuals in the U.S. Senate that are willing to see this process through. As a people, we have a right to know that everything is being done to fix the systematic failures that occured within the military that we pay for with our tax dollars. I also believe that Majority Leader Frist deserves credit for doing the right thing and backing the investigations. Posted by Mathew at May 28, 2004 03:12 PMComments
Outstanding. It seems to me the Congress, as well as the military, needs to figure out what happened and punish the offending parties. Don't make too much of it, or too little -- just find out who's really guilty. It's unclear whether this is a few soldiers, or soldiers plus intelligence officers, or something more sinister that goes higher up the command. Whatever the answer is, find it and hold the right people accountable. That's a key thing that makes us different from the tinpot dictators who normally engage in these kinds of things. The rule of law, and accountability, even for the powerful. Posted by: William Swann at May 28, 2004 04:53 PMI posted this story on our blog today too. I'm not a Republican and I tend to not like their politics in general. But I too gave Kudos to Warner and Frist. Warner especially is doing a very good job...especially being under fire from his nefarious colleagues. Here's what I really want to know, tho. Who's the guy that sounds out the daily talking points for the GOPers? Santorum was on Imus this morning with almost the same exact words as Inhofe and DeLay. It's pretty much like listening to the same guy talk over and over only using a different voice. Posted by: carla at May 28, 2004 09:09 PMI know... Kind of like John Kerry, Tom Daschle, and Nancy Pelosi. I think the conservatives probably got together on this one to discuss strategy. The conservative leader in the Senate would be Santorum and for the House it would be Delay... neither one of them have a message that is very compelling as far as I am concerned. Posted by: Mathew at May 28, 2004 10:02 PMNaw Mathew...the Democrats aren't nearly as good at staying on message as the GOP. And frankly they're not using the exact same verbage as each other, either. Look at these statements...they're strikingly similar: Inhofe,"We have a war to win, and we need to keep our talents concentrated on winning the war as opposed to prisoner treatment." DeLay,""We should not allow it to distract us from the war at hand." "Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), "...a real distraction from trying to win the war, especially at this most fragile time." I agree that the Democrats probably have talking points they're supposed to parrot too...but they don't have this kind of discipline...especially in the face of hard core criticism.
