A setup?

Kerry said he would release his military records. Then he said that he wouldn’t release all of the records. Firestorm ensues, particularly in conservative blogosphere.

Okay, once the media frenzy is in high gear and everyone is watching, Kerry releases records which show that, unlike Bush – who checked the box “DO NOT VOLUNTEER FOR OVERSEAS” -- Kerry wrote “I request duty in Vietnam.” Now lefty blogosphere displays the two forms, side by side, and says "take that." (See here and here.) I don’t know if this was a deliberate strategy, but it is working out nicely.

UPDATE: Allegedly "goaded" by LT Smash, Kevin Drum twists the knife.

Todd:
Who cares? So Kerry volunterred to do the JFK routine on as suped up PT boat. Most of us passed on Vietnam because it was a pointless war that was not worth dying for.

The big question is what is his plan to handle terrorism, particularly given the UNSCAM is seeming to compromise his preferred alies. Heroics
forty years ago speaks to nothing.

I'm not going to vote for a guy because he was a hero 35 years ago, but I think that it provides some insight on the man. I also think it is as least as relevant as his protest of the war afterward, the issue the GOP wants to discuss. I don't need any further information about either his service or his later protests.

The "JFK routine"?

Who'd have thought that people would be so cavalier about an individual saving people's lives while under fire?

I can't decide which is uglier...the Republican attack machine on Kerry saying he didn't deserve his medals...or the cavalier attitude about saving lives.

This is shameful, in my opinion.

The records indicate the type of men they are.
Kerry doesn't look any where near as weak as they make him out to be.

This country changed after Vietnam. That was a huge line of demarcation. The way I see it, after that it became an us and them country. It led to an overgrowth of spoiled and soft yuppies. And, now their offspring.

So, now what do we want? I don't think that we all should be required to put our blood on the line for military misadventures to be Uncle Sam to the world? We are in 135+ countries. The Republicans don't want to pay for and reduced taxes on top of it all.

Do we want to pay people who serve mercenary wages, so that if they lose life or limb their families are well taken care of? Why not? You're all paying for the mercenaries over there now. Patriotism?
Patriotism to go over? No way --only to defend this country or re what occurred in WWII for ex. Just give the supplies and consultancy to do it for themselves.

There has never been a national debate about National Service requirement for all? I think we all should be trained to defend our home land.

Janus

Besides, after politicos boondoggles and misadventurs how many millions then came over here that you have paid and are paying billions for here? Peoples form all over the world due to.

No. Not a setup. The conservatives overreached. They always assume the worst of liberals, so they assume that a decorated heroic liberal must be a fake.

I do think the records are relevant, because they show that Kerry killed Viet Cong in the service of this country. Carter, and arguably Clinton, were Commanders-In-Chief who were afraid to pull the trigger. Kerry is an alpha male who can handle the job.

Interestingly enough I'm hearing that Halliburton had contracts with Saddam via offshore companies and strategic alliances while Cheney was CEO. This at a time when US companies were barred from doing business with Saddam.

Everyone claims that Vietnam was a pointless war that was not worth dying for. As a 34 year old whose seen us fight in Grenada and Panama, what wars WERE worth fighting for?
