Luntz v. Carville

Rolling Stone magazine has a reasonably objective discussion between Frank Luntz and James Carville. Interesting line from Luntz (a Republican pollster) -- "only about two percent of Americans really matter in this election." As an undecided voter in a battleground state, I'm in that two percent.

I disagree with Lutz, as well as the mass media.

We've been hearing for a long time now how America is so evenly divided 50/50. In terms of electoral politics that is a partial truth at best. The reality is that (I'm being generous here with round numbers) only half of those eligible to vote do so. So, what we really have is a country divided 25/25. For that reason I strongly disagree with Lutz's assertion. Perhaps 2% of regular voters are up for grabs - I'm not agreeing with the number, just making a point... But, either candidate who can get whatever percentage of the remaining 50% to vote for him will, by definition, be exceeding Lutz's figures.
