Nader and Iraq

Don't rule out the possibility that Nader will have an even more important impact in 2004 than he did in 2000. Consider this from his website (dated April 19):

Washington, DC: Today, Independent Presidential candidate Ralph Nader put forward a three-step approach to rapidly remove US military forces, civilian military contractors and US corporate interests from Iraq. "Every day the US military remains in Iraq we imperil US security, drain our economy, ignore our nation's domestic needs and prevent democratic self-rule from developing in Iraq, nor does the belligerent rhetoric of the Bush regime help the cause of moderates in Iraq." Nader said.

Nader made his statement amid calls by President Bush and Senator Kerry to "stay the course" despite increasing violence against US soldiers and US military contractors.

There should be no doubt that many in the anti-war camp are going to decide that Kerry is no better than Bush on the war issue, and they aren't going to know what to do. The critical question is how many in that camp are really anti-war first and how many are really anti-Bush first. If they are anti-war first, they may vote for Nader or be convinced by Nader's arguments but simply stay home. Either way, each one will be a lost vote for Kerry.

Comments

Not that Nader's comments are especially surprising...but they're incredibly stupid.

We can't leave Iraq. I am foursquare against the invasion and occupation of Iraq...but we've made a complete mess there. We can't just up and leave. That would be massively irresponsible.

There are very few people on the Left that are "anti-war" relative to the total Lefty population. Most every liberal I've know is solidly for being in Afghanistan and getting Bin Laden. They're also for keeping the promises we made to Afghanis to help rebuild their country (especially after Reagan reneged on his promise to do so).

I'm unaware of many Americans who want us to just up and leave Iraq....

Btw...I checked out Nader's site from the link...and I cracked up at the letter begging Michael Moore to come back to the fold. HAHAHA!!!

Carla: If all your lefty friends support going after bin Laden in Afghanistan -- you must be in NYC!! :-)

Out here in my midwest college town the lefties could care less. I don't think they feel at all threatened. They are religiously anti-war. They'd rather teach the world to sing in perfect harmoneeeee!

RE: Nader. Why is it that two of three candidates seem to be mentally unstable self-righteous bullies. We'll all have to pretend we're Canadian when we go to Europe on vacation.

Every day the US military remains in Iraq we... prevent democratic self-rule from developing in Iraq

Does Nader actually believe this would happen without our presence?? After the events of the last few weeks, are there any doubts that we're needed to give the less radical populace of the country the courage and the space to solidify their rightful power base??

For an interesting exercise, take Nader's statement and substitute "Minnesota" for "Iraq". It makes just about as much sense.

Dory:

Actually I'm in Oregon. I just don't see many liberals who are "anti-war". I can't think of one person I know or heard of that was against us going into Afghanistan.

As far as the traveling thing, I'm going to Europe this Summer (England and France). Having read quite a few travel guides already I find that the "Anti-American" sentiment thing is pretty overblown. From what I've read you find very few Europeans who dislike Americans. You will find a lot of Europeans however who dislike Bush and his policies.
