Bill Rubs Off

Look at how skillfully and with sidelong reference Hillary Clinton sticks the knife into Bush:

The consensus was the same, from the Clinton administration to the Bush administration," she said. "It was the same intelligence belief that our allies and friends around the world shared.

"But I think that in the case of the [Bush] administration, they really believed it. They really thought they were right, but they didn't let enough sunlight into their thinking process to really have the kind of debate that needs to take place when a serious decision occurs like that."

She conceded that making such decisions is "very tough" for the occupant of the Oval Office.

"That's one of the reasons why I think it's important to have a president who asks a lot of questions, who is intellectually curious, who seeks out contrary points of view, who doesn't just surround himself with people who see the world the same way," she said. [emphasis mine]

"You have to have a decision-making process that pushes a lot of information up and asks a lot of hard questions. You don't get that sense from this White House."

I'd be shocked if HC doesn't run in 2008. Bill has definitely rubbed off on her. It's a veneer of sensible grace disguising utter political ruthlessness. Even if you don't like it, you have to admire it.

Okay, I'll take the opposite view. I'll be shocked if Hillary does run. I see her as the Newt Gingrich of the left -- highly popular with the base, highly unpopular with everyone else.

She's probably smart enough to realize she has no better prospects than Gingrich did back in the 1990s when some people thought he would run.

Love her or hate her, but don't ever ever underestimate her.

Well I said run, not win. She's going to skim the "first woman President" cream, so I think that gives her more legs than Gingrich.

Although it does make sense to me that the GOP will field the first woman Prez. It's one of those "not a good idea until the GOP embraces it" things which really has mostly to do with mainstream comfort wth such firsts.

I agree with Oberon. She's far too polarizing to have a realistic chance of winning - even in a primary race.

What I don't think a lot of people outside of the ideological Left don't understand is that she's very polarizing even among her liberal base. My girlfriend is a politically active liberal who has held elected office here in Oregon who loathes Hillary. She tells me that she's not the only liberal who feels that way about Hillary. The interesting thing to me is that she feels very passionately about Hillary. Her reasoning is quite a bit different from the far Right. But, what matters for purposes of this thread is that even Hillary's base is divided about her. Not the sort of basis upon which one builds a successful national political campaign.

Agree, don't underestimate Hillary.

And, Bill & co. were behind DLC --a more moderate/centrist emphasis.
