Did I Miss Something?

From CNN:

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- The Massachusetts Legislature adopted a new version of a state constitutional amendment Monday that would ban gay marriage and legalize civil unions, eliminating consideration of any other proposed changes.

The vote came at the opening of the third round of a constitutional convention on the contentious issue, as competing cries of "Jesus Christ" and "Equal Rights" shook the Statehouse outside the legislative chamber.

I must have been napping. When did "Jesus Christ" and "Equal Rights" become adversaries?

Hi, Brian

After lunch (Brian and I met for lunch in Boston, the first time I've met another Centerfielder in person. It was fun.) I walked back through the Boston Common and noticed crowds around the state house. So I walked up to see what was going on.

Both sides of Beacon Street were lined with people holding signs. Probably 8 out of 10 were pro-gay marriage. I didn't hear any shouting, except in response to car horns (i.e. honk if you love Equal Rights)

The Unitarian Universalist Church has its world headquarters only steps away from the statehouse. They have a large banner on their property, easily visible from the statehouse steps, supporting gay marriage.

I support gay marriage, though I much prefer the people, and state legislatures adopting it, rather than it having to be pushed through by judicial activism. I will certainly vote for it when the referendum reaches the ballot.

I love the Unitarian Universalists, a church that absolutely anyone can feel at home in.

I think that my problem with the entire gay marriage flap is that it's being pushed by "in your face" activists determined to make their point before the public's ready, thus actually setting the cause back. I also think it's something that will come anyway, not just gay marriage but a complete sea change in the nature of families and marriages. Not just gay marriage but various forms of multiple marriage.

We're going through some real changes in the nature of society, have been for over a century as technological change accelerated. Society will change as a result. Should we fight the tide, or learn to swim?
