Meet John Avlon, Centrist Author

We just heard by email from John Avlon, author of the recent book Independent Nation. John is also a columnist for The New York Sun, former speech writer for Rudy Giuliani, and worked on Clinton's campaign in 1996.

John has his own website now -- Independent Nation -- and he's asked about linking from his site to our forum at the Centrist Coalition. We may very well be working out something where are discussions are linked to one another.

I was just looking at some of John's newspaper articles, linked from his site, and it's clear he's one of our strongest centrist authors. He wrote a piece on John McCain just a few weeks ago that I think is pretty remarkable.

I especially like the Paul Tsongas quote there:

"“The core of America is not racist. It is not hostile to women. It is increasingly offended by gay bashing. Yet it abhors government waste. It believes strongly in fiscal responsibility such as balanced budgets. It is pro-economic growth. It is concerned about the environment. It is intolerant of people on welfare who disdain the notion of work. But it wants poor kids to have school lunches and it wants to spend money to have good schools. In sum, most Americans are sensible, good-hearted, and prudent. The issue, then, is whether there is a political party that can welcome them home.—Senator Paul Tsongas”

I also like the idea of centrists slowly building critical mass. Link away.

I love that Tsongas quote too. That might be the best concise statement of a general centrist perspective I've seen.

I didn't bump into it on John's site, so I'm glad you posted it here.
