Where do you fit?

I really enjoyed Michael Totten's Tech Central Station essay Are the Jacksonians Sated?
Totten discusses four archetypes of American foreign policy, based on the policies of Jackson, Wilson, Hamilton, and Jefferson.

Jeffersonians are principled pacifists. Hamiltonians seek a stable and orderly world made secure for the global economy. Wilsonians build international institutions that promote freedom and human rights. They also fight for a world that's safe for democracy. And finally there are Jacksonians, who are isolationist in peace time and ruthless in war time.

Read the whole thing. It's food for thought. The categories are imprecise of course, but there seems to be some real truth gotten at. (There's also lengthy discussion over at michaeltotten.com.)

I think I'm more of a hard wilsonian than a jacksonian, myself. But I find a lot of appeal in the way jacksonians are described, and with the point that the other groups need the jacksonians to get what they want.

Fascinating piece. I like the concept of a foreign policy that combines Wilsonianism and Jacksonism -- speak softly and carry a big stick.

What I really liked was the idea of the jacksonian cowboy who is happy to go about his business and let people go about theirs. But then if you screw with a jacksonian, he'll get all up in your face in a heartbeat, and play for keeps.

I think this is so characteristic of our country when taken as a whole, and goes a long way towards explaining our reponse to 9/11. Our country is big enough, wealthy enough, and entertaining enough to be a world unto itself for most of us, with our busy lives, as well as across a big ocean from a lot of the world's action. We tend to fall easily into isolationism, but if you poke us with a stick when we're sleeping, you might get a punch in the face instead of a confused grin.
