March 24, 2004How About A UN without Dictatorships?Read this Reason article by Jonathan Rauch on the possibilities for a democratic caucus within the UN. It's always steamed me that we get one vote and Libya does too. (Yeah, we're on the security council, but that's not much solace.) One important point Rauch makes is that while allowing non-democracies into the UN was pretty much unavoidable back in the days when democracy was pretty scarce, a "UN for democracies only" is now an increasingly sustainable idea. Read the whole thing. Posted by Brian Keegan at March 24, 2004 12:43 PMComments
What do you mean, it's not much solace? The U.S. (along with 4 other countries) have the power to block almost any significant U.N. action. I think that should be worth quite a bit of solace. Posted by: Kevin Brennan at March 24, 2004 01:51 PMI guess I'd be more sanguine on its worth if it could, say, keep Libya off of a human rights commission. Or if some of the other fellow members were different. Posted by: bk at March 24, 2004 02:51 PMYes, this is great. Democracies are superior, morally, to non-democracies, and this should be a bigger guide. I suggested forming a NATO Human Rights Enforcement Group, to be composed of democracies, only. http://tomgrey.motime.com/1069719534#176755 Such groups are NOT incompatible!
