Goldberg Calls Independence a "Shtick"

Michael Totten is slapping Jonah Goldberg for saying that independent voters are just practicing a shtick.

As MT points out, Goldberg is relying on a straw man. Not a shining moment for Goldberg. "Let's describe a nitwit, call him a good example of an independent, and make all the insecure partisan right wingers feel better about mindlessly toeing the party line."

Is that all you got, Jonah? Boy I used to thing Goldberg could bring it, but that's some weak cheese, meat!

Go ahead and read the whole thing, and the good links over there.

Jonah Goldberg strikes me as a remarkably intelligent guy with the penchant to utter remarkably stupid things on a regular basis. The statements are all the more entertaining for actually being stylistically erudite, yet substantively silly. One of those weird cognitive dissonances.

He was sounding off earlier (cited in Parapundit) about how first-generation immigrants are more "American" than avg. 20-something "natives." Now, I get that ol' misty eye myself whenever I conjure up images of the industrious, selfless, America-loving newcomer. But Goldberg's comment was a blatant slap in the face against all the American kids trying to make a living or dodging bullets in Iraq. The guy can sometimes sound intelligent and nuanced, but too often his brain seems to have a flatulence attack when he opens his mouth or types on his computer. I actually think the guy has a good head on his shoulders and often has insights that others miss, but he's gotta know when to rein it in and fold his cards.
