A Blow to Free Speech or For Decency?

Cathy Young is on point, and as usual showing both sides in her Reason column on the recent dust-up over the Reagan docudrama.

The money point:

As often happens, double standards come into play. Conservative pundits such as Bill O'Reilly of Fox News decried the boycott organized by gay rights groups against Dr. Laura Schlessinger's television show as a threat to free speech. Now they are praising the action against CBS as a legitimate expression of popular anger. Most of the liberals who are appalled by the cancellation of "The Reagans" probably supported the boycott of Dr. Laura's advertisers. It all depends on whose ox is being gored. But then, what else is new?

The whole thing is worth reading. As Cathy Young almost always is. Anyone tempted to dismiss Reason as libertarians run amok would do well to give her a chance.

Here is a really link to a huge 8MB PDF of the script of the "The Reagans" It takes a long time to download.

http://images.salon.com/news/feature/2003/11/07/reagans_script/reagans.pdf

According to Salon.com, this script is undated, and, though it most likely represents a "shooting script" matching the version of the miniseries that was
originally planned for broadcast, we cannot be sure that the script itself was not further edited, and it's likely that additional changes were made during
editing. Showtime, the cable network that has acquired "The Reagans" from CBS, has announced that it will "collaborate with the filmmaker to create a final film," so the Showtime version is likely to differ further from this script.

Hehe, libertarians run amok. Tickled my funny-bone. There are some running amok there in the comments but I find myself reading almost every day.

Yeah, the doctrinaire elephants in the comments can be off-putting, college students and social outsiders walking around with Atlas Shrugged in their back pockets. The ones who can be relied on to oppose anything the government does can be pretty laughable, butI think lots of good thinking goes on in those pages.
