September 11, 2003Wa Post: Dean to Clark- VP?The press is having a bit of fun today, or maybe they are on to something. It seems as if a 'secret' Dean/Clark meeting has been construed into a request for a Clark VP with Dean. I wonder if Hillary was hiding in the shrubs? It looks like fun and games really, as the press is drumming up support and debate on the issue. Most interesting of all though is this statement directly from Dean: "This is a guy I like a lot. I think he's certainly going to be on everybody's list if he's not the presidential nominee himself." Could Dean be lobbying for a VP position on a possible Clark ticket? Hmmm, interesting! If Clark runs for President, I will support him, even if he were to pick my non-favorite, Howard Dean, as the VP candidate. I would just rely on the Secret Service to keep him safe. My current inclination would be to not support a Dean/Clark ticket. I don't think Clark would ruin his chances to be VP if he were to run an unsuccessful presidential campaign, as long as he demonstrates some support (especially in the South) and runs a positive campaign that doesn't demean whomever the eventual winner is. Posted by: rickheller at September 11, 2003 08:13 AMThis possibility has been bandied about by Dean supporters for some weeks now. I always thought it was kind of idealistic wishful thinking -- like, wouldn't it be great if our candidate had the *perfect* VP? Looks like they were on to something, though ... at least as far as Clark explicitly exploring and considering running with Dean. I think it's a serious possibility. And it almost wraps the whole thing up for them (the Democratic nomination, that is) if they do it. Like you, I feel quite uncomfortable with it. I don't see in Dean the kind of president we desperately need right now -- someone steady, level-headed, and realistic. And I'm unsure how I feel about Clark. It seems possible to me that the Bush administration will give the Democrats a wide-open shot in 2004. There are too many issues on the verge of blowing up for Bush -- the economy, Iraq, and North Korea. Any one of them could sink him. It also seems possible the Democrats will fail to go through that big opening. They mainly need someone who is reassuring, sensible, and steady. Who on that stage fits the bill?
