The Internet Campaign

David S. Bernstein has a roundup in the Boston Phoenix of how the various campaigns are using the internet and blogs in particular, mentioning those of Edwards-turned-Dean supporter Oliver Willis and Dean-from-the-start Markos Moulitsas Zuniga of the Daily Kos

Here's what Bernstein has to say about a Kerry meetup.com event.

TRIDENT BOOKSELLERS & Café is located within walking distance of John Kerry’s Beacon Hill residence, so you might expect a gathering of his supporters to fill the small shop. Especially since this was a MeetUp — arranged through MeetUp.com, which former Vermont governor Howard Dean’s campaign has used to recruit thousands of followers. So the seven Kerry fans who came to Trident last Thursday evening couldn’t hide their disappointment. (Actually nine showed up, but two well-groomed thirtysomething buddies left quickly, apparently having anticipated more of an opportunity to MeetUp with single women.) Trident’s wait staff was also surprised by the poor attendance; more people than this had come to an atheists MeetUp the previous week, and even a recent MeetUp of witches had seen a better draw.

I'm planning to to go a Clark meetup on Monday. I hope we outdraw the atheists.

My Dean MeetUp in Baton Rouge Louisiana, a RED State drew 34 people. That's up from 11 two months ago.

I will go to the Clark meetup next week to see what its about.

I went to the Dean meet-up here in Columbus yesterday -- tagged along with my wife, who is a Dean supporter.

I understand there were four meetings in Columbus that night. The one we went to was in our little suburb of Hilliard. (Hilliard isn't that *little*, actually, but it is staunchly Republican.)

There were about 40 people there.

Among other things, what interested me was the tools these folks are developing and using to organize. They talked about Dean Link, and the whole decentralized approach to organizing where people take action themselves and develop their own groups and meetings.

I think we're seeing the future of politics. And I think centrists need to learn how to use those kinds of methods to build a real national movement and to actively explore alternatives to the traditional politics of left and right.

New technology. New methods and principles of organization. And a fresh, alternative approach to dealing with the issues we face. All would seem to go together rather well. But for the moment, at least, I sense other folks are using those tools much better.
