It looks possible, now, that the North has simply decided it needs a nuclear arsenal as a deterrent, and that it won't negotiate them away. This is one situation where Bush's swaggering has got me very nervous. He's said that we cannot tolerate North Korea having nuclear weapons. Why not? We tolerated Stalin having nuclear weapons. The last 50 years have show that Communists can be deterred from using nuclear weapons. That may not be the case with Islamists, who seem enamored with suicide, but Reds, being atheists, seem to 'get' the logic of deterrence. Posted by: rickheller at August 28, 2003 04:42 PM |
